The Don’t Trash Nevada messaging campaign is informing and inspiring. A student studying graphic design at the College of Southern Nevada had a class project to create an advertisement with a cause. Jose Ybarra chose to raise awareness by creating a wallpaper to advocate recycling and reusing to keep Nevada a clean place. We are pleased to introduce Jose and his work.

Hi, my name is Jose Ybarra and I am currently studying graphic design at CSN. I created this wallpaper to raise awareness about recycling, which is one of the ways to help keep Nevada a clean place. I used photographs of our beautiful scenery including Lake Mead, Red Rock, and the Mojave Desert to display all the landscapes that make up Nevada. The wallpaper states to Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce in effort to create less waste that would end up in our dump. On the left margin it displays the various products that are able to be recycled and in turn make Nevada a cleaner place for generations to come. Through creating a wallpaper that will hopefully catch Nevadan’s attention, we can all do our part to maintain this delicate state we call home. Middle school students serve as national example of good stewards of our public lands

Dr. Wiliam H. “Bob” Bailey Middle School has been named the best school program in the nation. The recognition comes from Take Pride in America, a national partnership program aimed at increasing volunteer service on America’s public lands. Each year, Take Pride selects outstanding examples of stewardship across the country. Bailey Middle School is one of 15 recipients of the 2009 Take Pride in America National Award, representing projects and events in 11 states and the District of Columbia.

Bailey Middle School joined with Liliam Hickey Elementary School to initiate the Great Unconformity Community Sponsorship. The program was designed to increase student achievement while developing a sense of community pride through the sponsorship of the Great Unconformity, a national geographical landmark located on Lake Mead Boulevard about 1.5 miles from the schools. The site, which is adjacent to the urban environment, was being destroyed by spray paint graffiti, broken beer bottles, and general trash.

Take Pride in America in Southern Nevada joined with the students, parents, the Bureau of Land Management, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers, Citizens for Active Management, UNLV, and Touro University Occupational Therapy students to sponsor the site. Take Pride in America in Southern Nevada is managed by the Public Lands Institute at UNLV and is a conservation initiative of the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership, a unique interagency partnership comprised of the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and U.S. Forest Service.

Approximately 400 students, volunteers, and agency representatives conducted seven clean-up events from September 2008 through April 2009 and removed six dumpster-loads of trash. In addition, students, teachers, and parents interacted with the habitat and historic site to learn how to protect the environment. Representatives of the Great Unconformity Community Sponsorship will be in Washington, D.C. to be honored at an awards ceremony for all national award winners on July 17 at the Department of Interior.

Bailey Middle School has made more than 20 field trips to the site since 2005 when the school opened. Bailey was officially named a Take Pride in America School in 2007, the only school in Nevada to have the designation.

Don't Trash Nevada Presents Prizes to Name The Mascot Contest Winners

Students at Thomas O’Roarke Elementary School in northwest Las Vegas had the opportunity to join in the celebration to honor two of its students during morning assembly on November 7. Fifth graders Jacey Canfield and Zachary Lyday, both ten years old, were recognized for submitting winning names in the Don’t Trash Nevada Name the Mascot Contest.

Jacey received the grand prize of a Dell Inspiron laptop for her creativity and originality in submitting the winning entry. She named the bighorn sheep Hector, which stands for Help Every Child Treasure Our Resources. As one of the first prize winners, Zachary was awarded an Apple iPod Nano. Additionally, Principal Fredris Breen and Assistant Principal Brenda Swann received Don’t Trash Nevada t-shirts for their school winning two of the five prizes awarded in the contest.

U.S. Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign have presented a United States Senate Certificate of Recognition and Distinction to the Take Pride in America in Southern Nevada program. The program recently received the Take Pride in America National Award in the state program category for its successful efforts to encourage public land clean-up activities and discourage littering and illegal dumping. Reid and Ensign note that the national award “is a result of your outstanding commitment to the enhancement and preservation of Southern Nevada’s public lands.”

LAS VEGAS – The Take Pride in America in Southern Nevada program has been named the best state program in the nation. The recognition comes from Take Pride in America, a national partnership program aimed at increasing volunteer service on America’s public lands. Each year, Take Pride selects outstanding examples of stewardship across the country. The Southern Nevada program is one of 11 national award winners, representing projects and events in more than eight states.

Take Pride in America in Southern Nevada is managed by the Public Lands Institute (PLI) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The program creates comprehensive and coordinated campaigns to effectively encourage cleanup and discourage littering and illegal dumping. It is a conservation initiative of the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership (SNAP), a unique interagency partnership comprised of the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and U.S. Forest Service. The program is funded by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.

“The growth of Southern Nevada and the popularity of our public lands have an unfortunate side effect of increased littering and desert dumping,” said Angie Lara, chair of the SNAP board of directors and associate field manager of the Bureau of Land Management’s Las Vegas Field Office. “This program was created to address those issues. We are grateful for the results, the favorable response from the community, and the national recognition of our efforts.”

Initiated in 2005, the program has conducted and supported more than 60 clean-up events involving 2857 volunteers, dozens of organizations, and alternative work forces that resulted in the removal of 3,713 cubic yards of waste from public lands. If the trash was placed in cubic yard boxes and stacked on top of each other, it would reach more than 11,000 feet high, 11 times taller than the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas. The program also implemented the Don’t Trash Nevada campaign, a messaging campaign to increase awareness about littering and dumping and ways to prevent it. The campaign has generated more than one million visits to its website and enticed over one thousand people to pledge not to litter.

“We managed this program with the clear purpose of gaining an increased community sense of ownership and responsibility for the stewardship of our public lands,” said Margaret N. (Peg) Rees, PLI executive director. “We have seen the positive impact on the public lands and a greater respect for the environment in general.”
